The Mission of LifeEthics.org is to help the Center for Medicine and Science in Bioethics to be a catalyst for the protection of human rights in medicine and science policy. The members of the Center for Medicine and Science in Bioethics uphold the dignity of human life and are active in the effort to protect of human rights in medicine and science. The only criterion for membership is a desire to protect the right to life of every member of our species and our children of the future. We do not discriminate among human beings because of age, abilities, or origin. We consider all descendents of the species Homo sapiens to be human beings with equal rights and the right to life to take priority to all other rights. We strive to “First, do no harm.” Vision The Center for Medicine and Science in Bioethics promotes a society where the equal rights of all human beings are protected without discrimination from the onset of the first cell division until natural death. We will educate and encourage our fellow scientists, our lawmakers and other neighbors to ensure that our activities, policies and laws are ethical. We will be active in the setting of public policy, laws, research protocols and regulations reflecting the standard of non-maleficence. We expect our professional associations, governments and communities to “First, do no harm.” Values All descendents of members of the species Homo sapiens, regardless of age, capabilities, location, or origin, are human beings who possess the inalienable right not to be killed, enslaved, or harmed for the benefit of other human beings from the single cell stage until natural death. We will use standard taxonomy and embryology terminology as well as verifiable scientific knowledge to define human beings rather than subjective opinion. The fact of being human is not dependent upon law, religion, age, abilities, the manner of inception or the intention of the parents or others who facilitate the beginning of life. We will lead our communities, our professional societies and governments in protecting the rights of all human beings. Core Values LifeEthics.org recognizes: 1. That there are scientific absolutes and truths that transcend relative social considerations and laws, including religious beliefs, ideology, or the interests of others or ourselves.* 2. That good science cannot exist in a moral vacuum and pledges to promote such science.* 3. The unique nature of the species Homo sapiens and that all members of the species are human beings who should be valued equally, without discrimination.
5. The priority of non-maleficence in ethics. “First, do no harm” must precede and be incorporated in the desire to do good. 6. The unique position of medicine and science to advocate for the protection of human rights. 7. The vital role of the Center for Life Ethics to promote human rights by advocating for the ethical practice of medicine and science. *Thanks to the American College of Pediatricians. http://acpeds.org LifeEthics.org recognizes: ¨ the unique nature of the species, Homo sapiens, ¨ that each member of the species and our progeny is a human being, ¨ that all human beings possess equal value regardless of laws, religious beliefs, or the needs of other human beings, ¨ that the right to life is necessary to the enjoyment of all other rights, ¨ that ethical medicine and science must allow only those practices which do not infringe on the equal rights of human beings, and ¨ that it is the responsibility of each of us to ensure that our peers and representative organizations practice the highest standard of ethics. We encourage all of our members, especially medical and scientific professionals, to become involved in setting the policies of their communities, associations, schools and businesses in order to ensure that those organizations maintain high ethical standards. We educate the public and professional communities on current events concerning the right to life and liberty of humans. Our members mentor one another in opportunities to serve in professional and academic capacities to fulfill our mission. We monitor and alert our members and the public about unethical scientific research and medical therapy. We are active in our own institutions and associations in order to influence the policy decisions of the organizations that represent us. We use standard scientific and medical definitions and verifiable scientific data whenever possible in our position statements and deliberations and expert opinions only when the evidence is not available. |
